Taro Baugham is also a drummer, keyboardist and ukulele player. He spends much of his spare time writing and recording songs for his performing projects and occasionally for independent film.
Taro was the drummer and co-songwriter for indie-rock band Inside Seka. In 2005 their song “Attention Deficit Hawk” was picked as the first track on Maybelline New York/Jane Reader music compilation CD for their unsigned bands competition. In 2008, two of their songs were featured in the soundtrack for the movie Redirecting Eddie by Kaliber Films.
On drums and keyboards, Taro spent several years performing with New York singer/songwriter and legendary downtown journeyman, Paleface. A cornerstone of Sidewalk Cafe’s “Anti-Folk” scene, Paleface had a major influence on Taro’s songwriting. Working with him also gave him the opportunity to hang out with the legendary Daniel Johnston and to share bills with Regina Spektor, The Moldy Peaches, Kimya Dawson and The Avett Brothers.
Taro currently writes songs and performs with his band Gigi & Pop, an indie-pop project that usually features ukulele, keyboards, toys and occasionally upright bass. In 2009 they won the “Best Variety” trophy at The Burlesque Hall of Fame in Las Vegas for a comedic rendering of the William Tell Overture that involved, tap-dancing, ukulele, whistling, a confetti cannon and a two-man horse. Gigi & Pop have released four albums.
